Wilton Cake Decorating Classes Online Free – I used to bake a lot before marriage, but with marriage Allah (God) blessed me with two small children in a row and a calorie conscious husband. This left me with little time or desire to pursue my love of baking, let alone decorate cakes.

I recently spotted an ad for Wilton cake decorating classes at my neighborhood mall. My daughters admire the gorgeous iced cakes, even though they hardly eat………….. they just lick the frosting. I thought it would be a good opportunity to revive my hobby now that my daughters are a little older. I told them about the course and they were more excited than me, anticipating all the frosting they could lick.

The initial decorating class consisted of four two-hour classes. The batch consisted of 10 friendly ladies and a gentleman who was the supervisor of the specialty store (Bulk Barn) where the classes were held. The instructor was an extremely helpful and experienced lady who was Wilton certified.

In the first lesson, we learned the basics of baking and icing. We then decorated some cookies with a piping bag using Wilton’s ready-to-use frosting. I didn’t get to photograph the cookies because my daughters licked off all the frosting before they got home……….their reward for agreeing to stay home with Baba (Dad) and behaving while Mom was doing something she had wanted to do. Long time.

In second grade we had to take an 8 inch iced cake to decorate with buttercream frosting in class. Here is a picture of the cake:

The third lesson was decorating cupcakes. We learned how to make screaming mummies, rosettes, pom-pom flowers, leaves, etc., but once again we didn’t get to take pictures.

In the final class, in my instructor’s phrase “final class”, it was all ribbon roses. A word of advice to anyone planning to take these classes: watch some YouTube videos and practice the roses before going to class. As you can tell from my picture, I had a really hard time doing them, as did most of my peers who didn’t practice enough at home. I also wanted to practice texting so I wrote “Ramadan Mubarak” (Happy Ramadan – Muslim fasting month) on my cake even though Ramadan was a month away, lol.

Check out some of the tools I bought for my Decorating Basics class besides the 8 inch cake pan and cake pan. I ended up buying a lot more than I originally thought. As my instructor said, once you start decorating a cake, you never stop shopping, so be prepared. The icing tips, spatula and piping bags were part of the student decorating basics kit, the rest of the stuff – record player, cake box, etc. had to be purchased separately. Then of course we needed the ingredients for our cakes, cupcakes, cookies and buttercream frosting. The next two levels require more stuff – 2nd and 3rd year.

All in all, it was a really enjoyable experience. At the end of the class we received a certificate, a Wilton tote bag and a free gift – a Wilton Message Pattern Press Kit. I think this was what was taught in our marketing classes as “customer delight” – exceeding customer expectations.

I’m also looking forward to the next two levels. In case you are wondering, no Wilton paid me for this…….. I wish they would 😉

I made a simple vanilla cake for both classes (2nd and 4th class) as my husband doesn’t like any chocolate cakes/fruit cakes etc. Here is the cake recipe:

3. Cream in a large bowl or. Add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and continue beating.

5. With the mixer set to low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the egg mixture, starting and ending with the flour. Each addition should be mixed until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl twice while beating.

6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out with a slightly moist crumb attached.

7. Cool the cakes on racks in the pans for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges and turn the cakes onto racks to cool completely.

This recipe makes the batter for two 9-inch pans. You can make two 9-inch cakes and place a layer of buttercream between them for a layered cake. However, I only made one 8 inch cake (didn’t want to double the calories even though a taller cake would have looked better) and used the rest of the batter to make cakes to freeze for my third grade class.

Sift the icing sugar and meringue powder into a large mixing bowl and set aside. Cream shortening, vanilla and water. Add the sifted dry ingredients little by little and mix on medium speed until all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed together. Blend for about another minute until creamy. If you only have a hand mixer like me, be prepared for a good workout for your hands while making the buttercream.

This buttercream frosting recipe was included in our lesson plan and we all had to use it in class to get a consistent result. This buttercream frosting has neither butter nor cream/milk, so the cake can be safely stored at room temperature. for a long time. A very stiff consistency is required for the roses, so I chose Wilton’s ready-to-use decorative waste………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. ………………………………………………………………… licensed registered nutritionist and trained culinary expert.
