The days of thinking that you need to use a 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ form to file your taxes are over.

When Do I Make Self Assessment Payments And File My Tax Return?

For tax years 2018 and later, one 1040 replaces the three forms with one version that looks smaller than the old 1040s.

Contain fewer boxes to fill. But because many of the lines from the old 1040A and 1040 have been moved off the main form and onto the supplemental schedule. So, taxpayers may have to file more forms with their tax returns from now on.

Since you still need to submit additional documents to the IRS, the answer to the question “What tax forms do I need?” still don’t have an easy answer.

First, all individuals who need to file income taxes must submit Form 1040 or 1040-SR (for senior citizens). In fact, the full name of Form 1040 is the US Individual Income Tax Return – so when people talk about “tax returns”, this is the form they are referring to.

If you look closely at your new 1040, you will notice that the IRS asks you to attach additional forms and schedules. It contains information from the old 1040 and 1040A that the IRS has moved to a new form with a new name.

In all fairness to the not-so-simple, new, shorter version of the 1040, most taxpayers send additional forms with the old version of the 1040, too. Even people who file Form 1040EZ (the simplest version of the old 1040s) must at least attach documents showing their income.

This form usually shows earned income. Of course, there are other forms you should include, but these are some of the most common.

If you are sending your return by mail, you can attach a copy of this form. If you e-file using an online tax program, you must upload the form to the program.

Your employer uses the information provided on the W-4, along with the withholding table and instructions from the IRS, to determine how much tax to withhold from your pay. You can set W-4 withholdings to pay more tax if you want to avoid a big tax bill and can increase your refund, or less tax if you want to keep as much money in your pocket throughout the year.

Not surprisingly, the postcard-sized 1040 form doesn’t give the IRS all the information it needs to determine how much tax you owe. You may need to include a schedule that provides the IRS with information about your credits, deductions and sources of income.

Your head can be swimming with all of these additions to the basic 1040 form — especially since each schedule lists additional forms that need to be included.

For example, you will receive forms from your employer or contracting company, from your student loan provider or mortgage lender detailing the interest you pay, and from your health insurance company that determines if you have adequate coverage to avoid tax penalties. You can also receive bank account statements showing interest income, dividend statements and other types of unearned income that need to be reported.

You’ll want to get all of these forms together before you file your return. This way, you will get the information you need to complete the 1040 form, as well as the various schedules you need.

You should also have last year’s tax return when preparing this year, because the IRS will ask for information from it. For example, the previous year’s adjusted gross income (or AGI) is used to verify your identity.

The federal government isn’t the only government that files your taxes — or that requires you to file forms. If you live in a state with an individual income tax and you need to file, your state will have its own rules about which documents you must submit when you file your state taxes.

The Federation of Tax Administrators has links to appropriate state tax forms for each of the 50 states plus Washington, D.C.

The Secret Sauce To Creating A Paper Filing System That Works

The 2018 tax year is the first for all individual taxpayers to use the new Form 1040. But the shorter, simpler 1040 doesn’t mean less paperwork for all taxpayers. Many will find that they still have a lot of additional paperwork to attach to the 1040.
