“I am truly grateful to Gov. DeSantis for trusting me to represent the people of Pinellas and Pasco County as State’s Attorney,” Bartlett said in a statement.

McCabe has spent half a century as a prosecutor and in 1992 was selected to oversee all prosecutions in Pasco and Pinellas counties. He died a few days before the start of another four years.

The circuit judge appointed Bartlett as acting state’s attorney after McCabe’s death. The governor’s appointment means Bartlett will serve the next two years, until the position is up for election in 2022.

Bartlett told the Tampa Bay Times that he intends to run for office in two years, which would be the public employee’s first long-term political campaign.

Charles “Bo” Harrison, who died in 2003; Police officer St. Petersburg David Crawford, who was murdered in 2011; and Tarpon Springs Police Officer Charles Kondek, who lost his life in 2014.

“I’ve had the honor of working with my friend Bernie McCabe for over 40 years,” Bartlett said. “His legacy, and the legacy of our office, is to work every day to uphold the highest standards of justice on behalf of the people of Pinellas and Pasco Counties; you have my word for it.”

“No one in the State of Florida is more qualified for the job of Sixth District Attorney than Bruce Bartlett,” Rowls said in a statement.

Nearly every state attorney general in the country is now investigating Facebook, adding to the growing threat posed by social media at multiple levels of government.

A total of 47 states have now signed a list of Attorneys General investigating Facebook for possible anti-competitive practices, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who leads the coalition, announced on Monday. Only eight other AGs were initially part of her office’s effort to investigate Facebook.

All told, the breadth of the investigation speaks to Facebook’s political discomfort with Republicans and Democrats, though sometimes for different reasons. Support comes from political leaders as diverse as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Tea Party conservative, to Pennsylvania’s Democratic AG Josh Shapiro.

In response to the news of the expanded investigation, Facebook emphasized in a statement that it faces significant competition in the United States and around the world.
