Booth: Business direction is a very defined silo. It’s a way of making movies. There is a path in progression from how you get in, to where you end up being the top business leader of all time. There is a whole team of people, from agents, editors, production companies, executive producers, all these infrastructure people who are involved in running, facilitating, and creating commercial content. Then, you have another silo, which is film and television projects. It’s movies, it’s TV shows, more or less projects by networks. It is the creators and production companies that put the content into action that they then sell and sell to the distribution platforms. It is its own system and the world, as well as its own representatives, and managers, manufacturing companies, etc. And, those two worlds, so to speak, are not very connected. I could be the best business leader on the planet, and it wouldn’t mean that a movie and TV producer or Netflix or anything like that would know me. Like Ryan

Now, there’s a third silo, kind of jumps in between, which is more or less exclusive content. Branded content involves borrowing a lot of language from film and TV. They are script or documentary type projects, but they are usually paid for by the brand. So, it’s kind of borrowing from business and borrowing from film and TV. I directed a documentary about a musician making a record in Iceland, and it turned out to be a ten or twelve minute piece. But Google pays for that. So, that’s kind of a weird thing that happened in the last 10 or 12 years that was new. It is this gray area in the middle.

What I’ve been doing and what I ended up finding with Pulse, is to create more structured business content. So there are 60 and 30-second spots intended for television. The business is changing and I can’t really speak to that because I’m new to this place, but I know what my experience is now. And there is a language, a process, and a strategy to make 30 and 60-second commercials. And you have to be invited to this world. Then, start with how it works. Then, just start advertising.

Booth: What happened to me, and I keep saying it to remind myself, is that any time my work has progressed, a personal task has happened immediately before that progress. So, I’m just really interested in something. I want to try something. I want to make a short documentary, or I make a performance video, or I make a short film, blah, blah, blah. And typically speaking, that is what leads to the next iteration of my work. Someone saw it. It goes anywhere, but really all that means is how I did something that has my own point of view, and “voice”. People respond to the clear path in the short answer.
