What Do I Need To Become A Mental Health Counselor – Prioritizing mental health has never been more important than now. Making positive changes can seem so difficult, especially in uncertain times, and sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are some tips to help you maintain your mental health:

2) Are you maintaining regular sleep patterns and getting enough sleep? (ie going to bed and getting up at the usual times and sleeping/resting 6-8 hours a night)

3) Do you use relaxation techniques at home? (i.e. focused breathing – exhaling longer than inhaling, sleep enhancing apps, meditation, reading, calming apps)

4) Do you focus on a balanced healthy diet? (ie eat fresh unprocessed foods, eat 5 fruits or vegetables a day, eat 3 regular portioned meals a day, limit snacks)

5) Do you stay well hydrated? (ie 1.6 liters per day for women 2.0 liters for men – suggested by the European Food Safety Authority)

This winter we are looking for 50 people to volunteer to be a mental health buddy in Sheffield.

This scheme, part of the Tackling Mental Health Inequalities Project, is simple – find volunteers to be support friends to individuals who have experienced challenges in their mental health. We fundamentally think that relationships can help bring health and well-being. Let me explain…

We all have our own strategies and ways to overcome bumps in the road and times when life seems hard and unfair. More often than not, that strategy will involve the help of someone else. But what happens if that support isn’t available to you?

Mental Health In The Workplace

We want to find 50 people who will volunteer to participate in the program. You can express your interest now. There is no obligation, but you will learn more and be invited to apply. We are looking for kind people who care about this issue and want to help. You don’t need experience or previous skills, just the compassion that comes from wanting to help another human being. We are looking for adults (over 18) of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds to participate.

We will arrange to speak with you, discuss more about the project and invite you to join.

We will then train you in mental health first aid and provide you with a support network through Space to Breathe. Training starts in January and will include two Saturday mornings, some homework and then a 1:1 session.

Over time, and once the training is complete, we’ll connect you with someone who will support you. This will be done in a safe and easy way through our Social Cafe or other initiatives. They will be controlled ways to keep in touch with your buddy and offer help when you can. All of this will be done alongside existing mental health support in the city and the services and care the person is already receiving. Your role is to offer friendship and the kind of support that comes with a cup of tea and knowing someone is there.

There are simple things you can do that can help you stay mentally and physically active during this time and relieve stress, such as:

Pick up the phone or video call with family and friends. It’s normal to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared, or angry during a crisis. Talking about your feelings to people you trust and listening to how they feel will really help.

Right now, it’s easy to watch the news 24/7 or click on every new social media article related to the coronavirus, but this can become information overload and is bad for your mental health. Try to limit the amount of coverage you watch or media posts you read.

National parks and gardens are now FREE (cafes, houses and retail outlets closed) so you can enjoy a walk in the beautiful open parks. Why don’t you go on a picnic?

Spend time doing things you enjoy – this could include reading, cooking, other indoor hobbies or listening to the radio or watching TV programmes.

Avoid drinking, smoking and overeating as methods of coping with negative emotions. If you feel overwhelmed and need to seek professional help, you can contact the charity Mind.
