Look, I’m a big fan of double bathing in all situations except sex. But your anus and rectum contain very different bacteria than the rest of your body. This bacteria can cause damage when it spreads to your vagina (read: yeast infections, UTIs, etc.). So, if I’m not clear enough, let me be very, very clear: don’t go from anal penetration – through the penis, tongue, fingers or toys – to vaginal penetration.
Well, you should always wash your hands, but you and your partner need soap
Before intercourse. Fingers are in all kinds of places, and the last thing you want is for bacteria to get on you (sorry for the visual). Need some proof?

One of the easiest things you can do to improve your vaginal health is to go commando while they sleep. Underwear — even good, breathable, cotton underwear (more on that later) — traps moisture against your skin, making your vagina a little more conducive to yeast and bacteria growth. Skip the underwear and sleep in loose, cotton shorts or pants. Or be completely naked – your call.
I mean, sort of. Did your doctor tell you to eat lots of yogurt or take probiotics while on antibiotics? This is because your body, especially your vagina, needs good bacteria to stay healthy and protect against infections. Fermented foods high in probiotics, such as yogurt or kimchi, can help prevent yeast infections and balance the vaginal biome. In addition, they taste good.
And if possible, do it regularly. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a general rule of thumb is to change it every 4 to 8 hours. Sleeping on a tampon is fine, but don’t forget to change to a new one when you wake up.
Fruits (and Foods) That Make Your Vagina Taste Better
Here’s an important distinction: the vulva is what you can see with your eyeball when you look at your pubic area. This is the term for the external parts of the female anatomy. It includes the labia majora, labia minora, and the tip of the clitoris. The only part of the vagina that you can see from the outside of your body is the opening. The rest is the tube that connects the vulva to the cervix and uterus.
Your vulva is covered with normal skin and can be cleaned the same way you clean the rest of your body—with a little more care. But be careful not to put the loofah in there or scrub too hard. First, you don’t have to. Secondly, if the soap gets into your vagina, you can have an unpleasant situation on your hands, be it irritation or infection.
ISN’T THAT FUN? The vagina naturally has a low pH, which prevents the growth of foreign organisms and maintains a clean atmosphere in itself. So, there is no need to apply soap to clean it. Water helps.
This cannot be emphasized enough. Heavily scented products, such as the sweet soaps you use on your armpits and elsewhere, can irritate the skin inside your vagina, which is more sensitive than the skin on the outside of your body. But this does not apply only to soap. Even something as simple as scented tampons used in your underwear or strong-smelling laundry detergent can irritate the vagina. And of course, avoid any fake products that promise to make your vagina look like a bed of roses. No one wants their vagina to smell like a bed of roses, and no one wants a bacterial infection.
All The Ways Not To Cleaning Your Vagina
Workout clothes are so cute and tempting to stay in post-gym breakfast and the rest of the day. Don’t do it! Bacteria thrive in dark, moist (sorry) environments. If you can’t shower after swimming or exercising, at least change into your bathing suit or sweaty underwear.
Cotton is the most breathable material you can cover your vagina with, but not as comfortable as synthetic mesh. And boats – albeit practical! – can put bacteria in the urinary tract because they’re so close, increasing your risk of UTIs (ugh). So choose your panties wisely.
And before! Technically, a UTI is a urethral problem. Urinating before and after sex helps empty all urine from the bladder and reduces the chance of bacteria sitting and multiplying in the body.
You probably don’t remember the exact lessons you learned while potty training, and peeing is just something you do with zero thought. But maybe apply some critical thinking during the shutdown phase. Wiping from front to back reduces the chance of bacteria from the rectum reaching the vagina or urethra. Bacteria near the rectum are better off staying near the rectum. It can cause infections and irritation elsewhere.
Vagina Facts You’ll Want To Tell All Your Friends
Based on the contents of my mailbox on any given day, there are many types of condoms available in offices. If latex is off-limits to you, no problem. Next time you need a quick thrill, walk down the condom aisle at the drugstore and you’ll see what I mean. The same goes for lubrication. A water-based lubricant works well for most people. But if you have problems with post-sex irritation and you’ve tried different lubricants and condoms and combinations of the two, talk to your doctor.
In general, you need to know what is inside them. Research shows that some brands of tampons contain harmful chemicals called phthalates, known as “endocrine disruptors” that interfere with hormones. Dioxins, a byproduct of the tampon bleaching process, have also been found in certain tampons. Although the level of dioxin found in tampons is much lower today than it used to be. Organic, unscented tampons and pads may be your safest bet.
Gynecologists everywhere will tell you the same thing: it’s bad for you and you don’t need it. The myth that douching makes the inside of the vagina clean and shiny is a myth! In fact, douching can make things even more complicated by introducing phthalates into your vagina.
You almost certainly do. But remember: your sex toys should be cleaned properly between uses. Just like you shouldn’t wear the same underwear for days in a row (hopefully), you shouldn’t use the same sex toy for days or weeks without washing it. There are special soaps and fancy gadgets that look like microwave ovens for cleaning toys, but a mild, unscented soap will do the job just fine. Most of these things are water resistant anyway.
