The University and social work programs are committed to meeting the needs of our students and clients and communities in the Appalachian Highland region and beyond. The mission of our new MSW program aligns with the university’s mission as well as the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics:

In the 2019-20 Tennessee Academic Supply and Career Demand Report, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) ranked master’s degree prepared social workers among the “25 most in-demand occupations with the highest annual vacancies.” The report notes that the “professional demand” for social workers in the country is far greater than the current “academic supply”. These THEC employment projection findings reflect national and regional data (Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky).

Licensure and accreditation issues dictate the enrollment timeline for students for both basic and advanced status. Our current plan is to enroll advanced standing students in the summer of 2022.

The founding coordinator of the MSW program is dr. Clifford Rosenbohm. dr. Rosenbohm is highly regarded in the social work academic community and has held important leadership roles in the discipline, including Director of Field Teaching, Department Chair, Director of the MSW Program, and Director of the School of Social Work. He has also worked extensively on the accreditation side of social work education and currently serves as a commissioner on the executive board of the Commission on Accreditation, CSWE. Additionally, he is a member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) Professional Accreditation Council for Social Work.

Dr. Rosenbohm is leading a national search to bring to the program well-qualified, Christ-centered and student-centered faculty for leadership and teaching roles.

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is the accrediting body that regulates social work education in the United States. All 50 states and the District of Columbia require that a social worker taking the licensure exam be a graduate of a CSWE-accredited program.

Accreditation through CSWE involves a 3-year gradual candidacy process that culminates in a decision on initial accreditation (full accreditation).

The university’s MSW program has achieved candidate status with the Commission on Accreditation (COA) of the Council on Social Work Education. While CSWE establishes and maintains national standards for all social work programs, each state reserves the right to establish its own licensure standards within its state borders. The University cannot confirm whether our social work program meets professional licensure requirements in the student’s state. The traditional major is designed specifically for students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) or who completed their BSW more than six years ago. This track completes 62 credit hours within a 3-year cohort model for stronger peer support.

The advanced standing track is designed for students who have earned a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program within the last six years with a 3.3 grade point average in the last 60 credit hours. The course is recognized only once a year in the fall semester. This track completes 32 credit hours over four semesters in a cohort model.
