Online Lds Seminary Classes – If you are missing a prerequisite for a course, you can add it. We offer biology, psychology, chemistry and two life science courses (biochemistry and physiology) three times a year. All courses are open to students applying to both the Toronto and Boucher campuses, and registration is open until the third week of classes (admission takes five business days from the date of registration).
Each course is 14 weeks in duration (3 credits) and is delivered in a blended learning style, which includes online self-study modules with weekly live interactive online tutorial sessions from 5 – 6 p.m. PT / 8 – 9 a.m. ET (one evening per week) with the course instructor. The pass rate is 60% and assessments will consist of one quiz per module (10%), assignments (15%), as well as one midterm exam (35%) and a final exam (40%) that will be facilitated online and proctored via supervision of distance

Seminary Is A Global, Four Year Religious Educational Program For Youth
Most of the lectures and assigned material will come from the required course e-textbooks, which are included in the course fee and can be accessed at the start of the course: Seminar is a global, four-year religious educational program for youth ages 14 through 18. It is operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but is open to teenagers of all faiths.
In the seminary, students and their teachers meet every week during the school year to study the Scriptures. The curriculum is organized in a sequential or chapter by chapter manner. Instruction focuses on a different volume of Scripture each year, rotating among the following four courses: Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, and Church History. By the time a student graduates from seminary, he or she will have completed the study of all the standard works of Scripture.

Courses are taught by full-time instructors in the populated areas of the Church and by volunteers and Church-service missionaries in other areas. To accommodate students around the world, seminar programs are offered in a variety of class formats:

More than 100 years ago, the first released seminary program was launched at Granite High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. The program has since grown into a worldwide system of religious education, bringing gospel instruction to young members of the church around the world. From small beginnings, the seminary program and its collegiate counterpart—institutes of religion—grew into the primary educational entities in the Church, with a larger enrollment than any other LDS educational venture and a broader reach than almost any educational organization worldwide. Today, the seminary and institute programs teach more than 700,000 students in more than 150 different countries.

“We’ve heard from a number of seminary teachers that the announcement [missionary-age eligibility] changed the conversation in their seminary classes,” said Chad Webb, administrator of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion. “There is an increased urgency and seminar has become more relevant and important to many students. They know that they are preparing to do something, they are not just in class. It has helped them in their level of involvement, their level of interest and their willingness to participate.”

Advances in technology have opened the doors to students who may not have had the opportunity to attend seminary in the past. Previously, there have been three ways for students to register for seminary—released time, daily seminary (often referred to as “early morning” seminary), and home study.
“With all the advances in technology in independent study courses and online courses everywhere, we started having conversations about if there would be a more effective way to help young people in these kinds of situations have a better experience,” said Kelly Haws, an administrator. who supervises online seminar. “So we started thinking about how to get more students to participate in seminary.”
The online seminar option is approved as an option for home study seminary students who have access to the technology necessary to do online seminar. As of now, the program is available in English-speaking territories with a plan to roll it out in phases in many other languages in the future. It is not available to students who have the option to do released-time or daily seminar.
“The curriculum we have for online seminary is very well written,” Brother Haws said. “It is different from independent study courses. It is very different from just posting home study material. This online class is interactive and is hosted on a platform that facilitates teachers and students sharing with each other.”
Seminary Students Are Well Equipped To Cope With Covid
Although the online seminar class has a similar appearance to a home study seminar, it is different for many reasons. Students can no longer set aside a large block of time each week to get all of the week’s assignments done in one day. Instead, the online class members complete their online work four days a week – at a time convenient for the student – and participate in a “class” together once a week.
“When students sign up, they will have a personal experience waiting for them,” Brother Haws said. “The class starts with them singing a hymn and having a word of prayer.”
Instead of simply answering questions on a worksheet and turning it in for credit, students are led in a study of the scriptures and can answer questions, express feelings, and share their testimonies through feedback to their teachers. They are able to have a daily seminar experience from home while still interacting with other students and their teacher. An online lesson usually lasts between 30-45 minutes. Teachers and students are not necessarily online at the same time, but they check in with each other and provide daily feedback. Just as a daily seminar teacher physically meets with a class in other areas, teachers can “meet” their students through online communication.
“It’s not an independent study class,” Brother Haws said. “If you’ve taken independent study classes in school, you know they’re kind of do-the-work-at-your-own-pace if you can grab a block of time to do it. Online seminar is not intended to be an independent study course. It’s designed to be an online course, a daily course.”

One day a week, students meet their class – either physically in the same location or, if that is not possible, as a group through an online platform that allows multiple students to video conference together.
This gives students the classroom experience and teachers the opportunity to interact face-to-face with their students. For many, this medium is very beneficial – giving shy or outgoing students an equal opportunity to participate and be heard, as well as giving students time to reflect and respond intensely.
For instructors, preparation and class time may look a little different for an online seminary class, but the time and effort required is comparable to that of a daily seminary instructor, Brother Webb said. Instead of a few hours of preparation and in class, teachers spend their time participating in the lesson, reading comments and responding to their students.
Many students fit into the church’s online seminary classes available this year. Students in areas where it is often difficult to get along with other students and teachers participate in an online classroom that includes discussion, questions, and interaction with others.

“They know that many of their students will walk right out of seminary and into the mission field,” Brother Webb said. “Seminary is a big part of her preparation in many ways”
Face-to-face seminar classes are preferred, so online seminar is not intended to replace free-time or daily seminar classes. Because there are still some areas around the world that are so geographically dispersed, home study and online seminar—where technology allows—are options for those students. The stake president in local areas can work with the Seminaries and Institutes of Religion coordinators in their area to decide which type of seminary classes would best meet the needs of their students.
