At a time like that, when there was limited face-to-face communication with midwives and health officers, online antenatal classes were (still are) so valuable.

Antenatal classes are classes that usually explain what happens to your body during pregnancy and birth. They are also called birth or birth classes.

Emphasis is usually on the third trimester, early labor, labor, stages, pain relief options, birth, caring for the baby, and early postpartum.

Prenatal classes help prepare you and your partner for birth. You can attend alone or with your birth partner (which can be your husband, mother or friend).

Usually, there are one or two instructors teaching a class of pregnant women with or without their birth partners.

Birth can be so unpredictable. Knowing what to expect and what can happen in different scenarios will give you a measure of peace of mind, security and confidence as you approach the birth of your baby.

For first-time mothers, pregnancy, labor and postpartum are all new experiences. As a result, there is a tendency for first-time mothers to fear the unknown.

Attending a good antenatal class will educate you about what will happen (in your body and outside with the midwives and health team) throughout the process of giving birth to your baby.

Basically, the midwife presses a buzzer and a team of specialist health officers burst into the room to assist and ensure the baby and mother are safe.

Bump Birth & Beyond

During the birth of my son, there was a complication. In an instant, there was a flurry of health officers in my study.

I was so thankful I knew what to expect when the signal was pressed. If not, I would have become very anxious, worried or even panicked if I didn’t know.

Which would not have been good for me or the baby. This is ONE reason I am forever grateful that I took those childbirth classes.

The third trimester is always a good time to start antenatal classes. So anywhere from 30-32 weeks is ideal.

When I was pregnant with my babies, I spent a lot of time watching prenatal classes on YouTube. Including one or two of the ones I mentioned above.

They made me feel more confident about the birth and I knew what to expect at each stage of labor.

It is also very convenient that you can take the classes from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace with your husband. You can even turn it into a movie night!

Mums-to-be whose antenatal classes have had to be canceled due to the coronavirus are now taking advantage of free online advice from a University expert.

Dr Alys Einion-Waller, Associate Professor of Midwifery and Women’s Health, says her first three-week course of classes is already very popular – 12 couples signed up for the first session, but that figure has now grown to 33 pairs of expectant parents.

Classes in birth-focused hypnobirthing, a way to use deep relaxation and self-hypnosis in labor and birth, are usually held at the University’s Academy of Health and Wellbeing. They learn techniques that help women and their partners relax and cope with the physical exertion of labor and delivery.

However, as the NHS focuses on essential services and due to social distancing guidelines, regular antenatal classes have had to be cancelled.

Live Online Antenatal Classes

Dr Einion-Waller said: “Typically online hypnobirthing classes cost a lot, but by offering these online for free, we are helping to contribute to the education and empowerment of pregnant people and their partners.”

She is using Zoom to create a live online class with the next set of classes starting later this month.

“Antenatal education helps people feel in control and make informed decisions during labor and delivery. Hypnobirthing teaches deep relaxation and a positive mindset, to build confidence and keep calm, reducing fear and anxiety, so this is the ideal time to offer such classes,” she said.

“Some of those who attended said they were experiencing increased anxiety during the pandemic and were grateful to learn practical techniques to manage it.

Dr Einion-Waller is delighted with the response she has received so far – within hours of launching her Facebook page she signed up her first group of parents to take part – and she is now looking forward to building on this initial success.
