If you’re new to cake decorating, the first place to start is with a great cake recipe. Here’s my vanilla cupcake recipe (you can also find a vanilla cake recipe!). This makes a super light fluffy sponge cake that you can then decorate however you like! Plus, the best thing about this recipe is that if you want a different flavor, you only need to change the flavor of the liquid.

I think piping the perfect buttercream swirl can be very satisfying, so if you want to learn how to hold the piping, pipe the cupcakes, or which piping tips give what effect, check out my piping techniques videos (you can find more on the channel).

Once you’ve mastered the buttercream swirl, how about moving on to some simple flower cupcakes. Roses are made up of mini buttercream rosettes surrounded by tiny flower buds and green leaves. These would make the perfect gift for a birthday or Mother’s Day!

Sometimes beautiful cakes are simple. I love this rose-inspired buttercream cake with a Keith Kitson vibe. This tutorial shows you how to cover the cake and pipe these pretty roses on the sides.

If you’re having a hard time keeping the kids entertained since many of us are on lockdown right now, here are some fun projects you can do together.

Unicorns are a very popular theme, so why not try these cupcakes. I also show you how to make a little rainbow cupcake topper.

Well, you’ve given up on cupcakes, why not try some cupcakes to match. Now Cakesicles are my favorite, with a chocolate candy coating and a delicious cake and buttercream mixture inside. Additionally, if you’re interested in creating Gaxicals, be sure to check out my other Gaxical tutorials.

Now this is one of my favorite cakes. It’s very simple in design, which makes it perfect to make with kids, but you’ll end up with this adorable birthday bear. You can make it as big as you want. I used 6 inch cakes, but if you don’t need that much cake why not try making mini versions with a 4 inch cake.

I love making little cake toppers and if your kids are fans of elephants why not try this cute cake topper. I made him out of fondant, but you can also do it out of clay if you prefer.

There’s nothing more fun than turning a cake into real food. So if you are a fan of donuts, how about trying this giant donut cake…

Gumpaste is one of my favorite things to do with flowers. There are currently over 16 different flowers in the step-by-step tutorial, and here are just a few of the ones you’ll find on my channel. If you can’t find it, let me know and I can add it to my list to prepare for you.

If you’ve never made compost flowers before, roses are a great place to start, and they look wonderful on birthday or wedding cakes.

With summer not far away, here’s how to make sunflowers to add to your cakes. These large flowers really have the wow factor!

Probably one of the prettiest flowers, these cosmos flowers can be made in any color and look great or be added to a flower spray.

OK, so you know how to make flowers, but if you’re looking for ideas on how to add them to your cake, try this flower ring.

I love a little cake challenge, but knowing where to start can sometimes be a little daunting. In these tutorials I break it all down into individual steps so you can see how the cakes are made and how to put them together.

Starry Night Bakery

This mixing bowl and electric whisk are all cake. One of my favorite cakes I’ve ever made, this cake has an anti-gravity structure made from materials you can find at a DIY hardware store. Why not surprise someone with their very own baking themed cake.

Now there’s nothing quite as summer fun as a bucket and spade. This cake is made using a 6 inch round cake and sand is also edible.

If you are a fan of anti-gravity cake or want to give it a try, try this giant ice lolly cake for more fun. Again the structure inside is made from materials you can find at a DIY hardware store and I’ll show you how to do it step by step on the cake.

If you’re looking for a fun topper for a girl’s cake, why not make her a little pair of shoes.

Cake Decorating For Beginners

It’s a little different from your normal 6-inch round cake. If you’re a budding astronaut in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to cover a sphere cake that looks like the moon and make this fun rocket look like a cloud of smoke as it lands.

Perfect for a summer party or bring us to a BBQ. Paint your cake inside and out to look like a watermelon.

Okay, I know this is a long list of my favorites, but there really are a lot to choose from and I really enjoyed them all. I hope you find this list of tutorials helpful and enjoy checking out the rest of the free tutorials on Linz’s Cakes YouTube channel. And don’t forget if you enjoy the videos to subscribe YouTube channel so you don’t miss new video tutorials.

I love seeing what you’ve been up to and would love to see if you’ve been inspired by any tutorials.

If baking is an art form, cake decorating is a piece. While it’s easy to whip up a batch of frosting (or buy a can from the store), put it on top of a cake and call it a day, adding some final flourishes can elevate a cake to a whole new level. But with piping tips, fondants, sprinkles, spatulas, scrapers and other decorating tools, where is an amateur home baker?
