Looking for a great resource for live online homeschool classes? There are many reasons why homeschool moms look into live homeschool courses for their children. But it can be a challenge to find something that has a good selection of courses and has a Christian foundation. Especially if you just want to try a class or two!
Live Online Homeschool Classes
In my search for great live online classes for the Christian homeschool, the program that stood out was True North Homeschool Academy. I decided we’d give it a try and they graciously offered to let us do two semester-long live classes in exchange for this honest review.
Why One Should Consider Live Online Home School Classes? By Bambinos
I have often looked into live online Christian classes for homeschooling, especially as we enter the upper grades. There are several reasons to try live online classes!
In all my viewings, the program that stood out was True North Homeschool Academy. Not only did it come highly recommended by an IRL stay at home mom friend of mine (that goes a long way), but it was everything I was looking for.
I planned to try it eventually, maybe in a year or two. But when they graciously offered to take a class or two a semester now in exchange for an honest review, we took it!
My oldest son is just now entering high school, so we may dabble in live online courses again in the future. But for our trial run of True North Homeschool Academy I decided to let my 6th grader choose two semester long electives to try out. She chose a fun watercolor painting class and a course to learn how to knit!
Creative Online Homeschool Classes
All live classes at True North Homeschool Academy use Zoom so teachers and students can interact. Sami was able to follow along with each lesson, ask questions and sometimes had short tasks to do on her own. She really enjoyed being able to communicate with the other students in the class too, who came from all over the world!
If we missed a class, the recordings were available for her to pick up herself. She could always message teachers during the week if she had comments or questions. Photographs of completed projects were taken and uploaded for teachers to assess. There was both a parent account and a student account so I could follow up and see how things were going or get in touch with the teachers.
I am very happy with True North Homeschool Academy and the courses we took. What I love most about it is the Christian approach and the obvious care they put into offering a variety of exceptional courses, quality teachers, and resources to bless families. The interactive nature and support of teachers was also very helpful for my kiddo. (I can’t paint or knit beans, guys. lol!)
The only negative I can think of is that doing a live online class involves a work life around our class schedule, which is not something our family is used to doing. I’m pretty sure we’ll try a few more online homeschool classes again in the future, but it’s more convenient for our family to save them for high school. It is definitely a blessing to have True North Homeschool Academy there for us when we need it!

Athena’s Homeschool Academy
If you’ve read my last two curriculum reviews (Mr. D Math and CTCMath), you know that I’m really into online homeschool classes right now. It’s ironic, really, because when I started homeschooling seven years ago, I was completely against online classes. Finding a school to enroll in with that lead without kids with screens was my top priority.
Somewhere in the last year or so, I realized that I couldn’t do this homeschooling thing on my own anymore: I needed help. I was trying to teach too many things to too many kids and we were all going crazy.
That help came in various forms, including homeschool coops and cooperatives, a reduction in extracurricular activities, and a shift to a more relaxed homeschooling approach. But online classes have been one of the biggest game changers for me.
We started taking French online in grade five and haven’t looked back. This year we switched to online math classes using a different program for each of my two older children. I am now also considering live online Bible classes and special electives. The Bible classes are available through our school and I have found great electives on the Great River Academy.
Year Cycle: Medieval Historical Era (live, Online Classes)
I like that my daughter is accountable to someone other than me and that she has a specific time each week when she meets her teacher and peers. Sometimes our kids get a little too comfortable with us and drag it out more than they would with an outside teacher. This can be frustrating for us as parents, constantly trying to turn in the work. It’s so nice to let someone else do that work for us.
Consistency of schedule is also important. When we try to study languages on our own, there are honestly some months where we go weeks without opening our language books and DVDs. It just ends up taking a back seat to the more important courses like English, math and science. I like how the schedule keeps them on track and moving along at a good pace.
The Great River Academy offers live online classes in a variety of subjects for children in grades 4-12. Their courses include required classes such as science, social studies, and math, as well as several electives and test preparation. The classes meet once a week for 90 minutes in a live classroom powered by Adobe Connect. The teachers also offer weekly office hours for students who need extra support. Students receive weekly assignments and access their grades and feedback through the online portal.
Let’s face it: as homeschooling parents we all have our strengths and weaknesses. There are some subjects that we can’t imagine outside of others (writing is a biggie for me!) and there are others that we wouldn’t dream of teaching ourselves (hello, physics!) -funny, sometimes even our favorite subjects are difficult for them to teach us. I love math and never thought I’d have a problem teaching it, but it seems being good at something doesn’t mean you’ll be good at teaching it. Who knew? But, I preach.
Great Books Academy
What I love about online classes is that they open up a whole world of knowledge to our children beyond what we can give them. The world is their classroom. They can study architecture, astronomy, and
