How Do I Become A Life Coach – This guide gives you more information on how to become a Life Coach. But it is also suitable if you are interested in other areas of coaching. As you will see mentioned in this guide, Coaching is Coaching! So if you’re thinking of becoming a life, career or executive coach, the process you need to follow is pretty much identical.
The world of coaching can be confusing. With different accreditations, educational paths, and niches (eg life, career, boss, etc.), you can get a little lost when doing your research!
How Do I Become A Life Coach
To help you navigate this, we’ve created a guide to help you understand the coaching profession and whether it’s a career path you want to pursue.
How To Become A Life Coach. What Is Life Coaching?
Typically a life coach would spend their day working 1-1 with people holding coaching sessions and performing any additional tasks to help their business run. This is key if the coach is self-employed (eg marketing, social media).
Basically, coaching is coaching (unless we’re talking sports and fitness coaching, which is really a different field).
When we talk about life coaching, we usually refer to individuals who support others in creating personal goals, enabling holistic and transformational change. That said, executive, career or other coaches would also do the same! A coach is ultimately a coach.
Technically, anyone can. Although we would suggest that this is something that you have to be passionate about! Ideally, Life Coaches are people who enjoy working with people, especially in a 1-1 capacity. Individuals who are open to feedback, reflective and open to guidance.

Life coaching is such a generic concept that it is difficult to stand out among all other life coaches.
If you position yourself as a life coach and someone else positions themselves as a health coach, who do you think a client will choose if they need support to get well?
Certified Professional Life Coach (exam Included)
So to become a life coach, go for a life coaching niche that allows you to support your client in a specific way. Maybe it’s health, relationships, career, parenting or spirituality. You decide! (See step 3 for more ideas.)
The life coaching training or course you choose should be accredited by an organization that sets industry standards for coaching programs. One such organization is the International Coach Federation.
And how much does it cost to become a life coach? It depends on. These programs are often priced somewhere around $1,000-$5,000 or more.
So instead of saying you’re “improving people’s lives,” you get them a specific result. Maybe you help them “find impactful careers” or “find a life partner without dating apps.”
Life Coaching Certification Course
You will want to find the sweet spot between what you KNOW (your experiences or skills) and what people are willing to pay for.
Does someone else already offer the service you want to offer? (You can do a quick Google search to find this out.)
Relationship coaching. Help people find a partner or improve their existing relationships. That’s what Ruby (as I mentioned earlier) does. Here’s a guide on how to become a relationship coach.
Career coaching. Another form of life coaching? Helping people build a career they love. My client Toni does. If you want to learn how to do the same, check out my Ultimate Career Coaching Guide.

Health coaching. Health is a big part of our lives and you can help people improve theirs. David does that with his signature program that teaches people how to use herbs to take care of their health. Here is my guide to help you become a health coach.
Mindset coaching. What’s a good way to help people get past the roadblocks they put up for themselves? Mindset coaching. My client Spencer helps people with this.
Spiritual coaching. Spiritual coaching can take many forms. For example: As an energy healer, Estelle helps her students bring their spiritual gifts to life.
Yes it is true. You see, a website won’t do much for you yet. Focus on this when you have a few customers.
What Life Coach Skills Do I Need To Have?
Just like any of your favorite brands (whether it’s Lululemon or Chanel), you need a strong identity that will bring your ideal customers to you.
Because you focus on individual customers, you can get them faster results and so you can price your services at a higher price than with other business models.
The beauty of these models? They give you the freedom to develop your business further without working more.
You don’t have to overthink this. There are plenty of creative names. But finding the “perfect” name won’t do much.
Transformational Life Coach Training (icf Approved)
I recommend that you simply start with your own name. And if you have a very generic name, you can add something to it, like “Jane Smith Mindset Coaching.”
Before we dive into how to get your first life coaching clients, I want you to know one thing.
But once you realize that your coaching has a huge impact on the lives of your students, you’ll feel much more comfortable marketing and selling your services.
(Need proof that your coaching skills matter? A 2016 study from the University of Salzburg shows that individual coaching and group programs are more effective at achieving goals than when people try to do it alone.)

I offered to coach five people who had asked me for career advice. When two of them said yes, I had a business.
And that’s what my client Emily did to start her business. She offered her services on LinkedIn and quickly got some sales.
You see, social media is full of communities. And by joining a community, you can build relationships that naturally lead to paying customers.
That’s exactly what I did. I helped a woman in a Facebook group with what she was struggling with.

I gave a lot of value. And as a result, she asked me how she could work with me.
To promote your free calls, post about your free sessions in the social media groups you’ve joined. Here’s the post a client used to book these free sessions:
And after you’ve had your free session, ask if they’d like to talk more about working together.
It’s so simple. Because you provide so much value up front, you can feel very good about selling your services.

You can structure your coaching packages as you wish. For example, offer weekly calls with support in between (here’s more on creating a coaching package that sells).
But there are still some steps to take. The next thing you need to figure out is your pricing.
Because this option is about the results rather than a specific number of hours you put in.
By niche down, you get your students better results. And when they see that you can help them, the perceived value of your services goes up.
How To Start A Life Coaching Business
There are no hard and fast rules here. This is one of the great advantages of being self-employed:
When you have testimonials and you can show your audience what amazing results they can get from working with you, your price becomes a mere triviality and you stop competing with other life coaches.
Step 7: Are you in a 9-5? Here’s how to grow your life coaching business on the side
Many of my students wonder how they can start a business while still in their day job.
How To Become A Certified Life Coach?
How did I get it to work? I set up a simple marketing plan (follow the marketing plan we talked about earlier, in step 5).
You might be wondering, “This all sounds great, Luisa. But how long will it take me to go from my 9-5 to a full-time business?”
But in the end, if you use a strategy (for example, using a specific social media platform instead of trying to master them all), you can leave your 9-5 sooner than you think.
That’s because with the package price we talked about earlier, you only need a few students
