YouTube: You might be surprised how many great online tutorials, courses and quick tips about family history can be found on YouTube. A simple search for “genealogy how-to” provides thousands of results and includes offerings from top experts, genealogy research sites and government repositories – including videos from the US National Archives. So whether you’re looking for help conducting German genealogy or need some family history basics, this is a great place to start.

FamilySearch Learning Center: There’s a reason FamilySearch is on almost every list we create here at Family History Daily—they offer the most extensive free genealogy site in the world. Their learning center is no less impressive. With a massive selection of quality courses on almost every topic and location imaginable, you’re sure to find something of interest.

Brigham Young University Independent Study: BYU offers a variety of courses on family history topics that are completely free to the public and available online. These offerings include classes on introductory genealogy, writing your family history and various regional tutorials.

UK National Archives Family History: From army musters to medieval record research, the UK National Archives has many media offerings for genealogists – and they’re all free and easy to access right on their website.

Places To Find The Free Genealogy Printables You Need Learning Center: Most of us think of Ancestry as a paid resource, but they offer a variety of helpful freebies, including a large learning center. Some (but not all) of the webinars and resources focus on finding records on, but are still very helpful for general research.

RootsMOOC – Intro to Genealogy and Family History Research: This open online course is offered by experts from the State Library of North Carolina and provides a complete introduction to genealogy research. This course is only partially available online.

National Genealogical Society: If you are a member of the NGS, you can take their courses at a reduced price. They used to offer a basic course for free to members, but this is no longer available. The annual fee is $65 for an individual and includes many benefits.

Hosted by our superstar genealogy expert Daniel Horowitz and taught by a world-class panel of experts, the course will provide a strong foundation in genealogy and teach you everything you need to know to embark on a journey to discover your family history.

Each section is divided into chapters and lessons that cover a wide range of topics, tools, and strategies for conducting family history research. The 40 lessons sometimes include short assignments and additional material to help you practice and absorb what you’ve learned. You will also find quizzes to test your knowledge at various points along the way. You can move at your own pace and track your progress as you go.

During the course you will learn how to build your family tree online, methods of researching your ancestors using historical records, how to use different technologies to grow your tree, an intro to MyHeritage photo tools, benefits of DNA testing for genealogy research, and much more , much more!

Click on “Start course” to register for free. You must register to start the course (even if you are already a registered MyHeritage user) so that you can track your progress as you move through the course.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll be taken to the online course to learn. You will also receive an email with a link to the course, so you can always pick up where you left off.

On the left, you’ll see a table of contents panel that shows the 3 main categories – genealogy, historical records and research, and DNA testing – and all the chapters and lessons within each category. Click on any topic to see all the lessons offered. Each lesson contains a detailed topic and time stamp.

Find Free Genealogy Course & Webinars

At the end of a lesson, the “Next Chapter” or “Next Lesson” button appears below the video. Click it when you are ready to move on to the next lesson. If you want to skip a lesson that you think is less relevant to you, just click on the next relevant topic in the table of contents.

When you complete a lesson, it will be marked as done in the table of contents, and your course progress bar will be updated.
