The Australian government forced all gyms to close this week after outlining the dangers of sharing an enclosed space with a group of people during the coronavirus pandemic.

For Ben Mills, co-owner of premium Sydney-based fitness center Shelter, that meant closing the doors of his beloved training space on Monday, much to the chagrin of his clients.

But the 29-year-old, who strongly agrees with Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s decision to close his business in Double Bay, did not rest on his laurels, instead hiring a truck and delivering 25 spin bikes to the community.

“I put a status on social media asking if anyone wanted a bike – and that it was first come, first served – and got a lot of responses,” Mr Mills told FEMAIL.

‘I didn’t charge anyone rent. I do not want to capitalize on this unprecedented event. There are still 190 people on the bike waiting list, so I’m trying to borrow more.’

Mr Mills and Shelter’s general manager, Jordan Coulter, loaded the bikes onto the van and ensured they reached their destinations quickly.

These bike owners will be able to connect to a live stream if they book into their regular spin class on the Shelter website, with the videos filmed using professional lighting and equipment in the gym itself.

“I’ve had digital in the back of my mind for a while now, but we just pushed it as the issue was time sensitive,” he said.

‘I wanted it to be premium and high quality. I did everything and invested a lot of money. It’s more like a film production with lights and 4K cameras.’

‘Shelter At Home’ will work on a ‘ride’ class, sculpting and Pilates, strength and conditioning and yoga, with prices as low as $8 to $10 per class.

All other gym memberships were suspended once Shelter closed and will continue until the government changes the restrictions.

“We’re not open every day, which affects my team and their livelihood, so I’m happy that the live streaming system will mean they can still work,” Mr Mills said.

‘It’s also so important for people to keep exercising for their mental health, as well as for the physical benefits. This is very close to my heart.’

For healthcare workers around the world, Mr. Mills to give them free access to the home workout routines, as a small thank you for the hard work they do to keep our nations safe.

An Overview Of Indoor Cycling

‘It’s the least I can do for people who work back-to-back shifts. I’ve heard some pretty intense stories, with specialists coming out of retirement to help and midwives on wards preparing for the worst,’ he said.

‘So far the response has been epic. I hope in the next 48 hours it’s a fully functioning pay-as-you-go system,’ said Mr Mills (pictured inside Shelter changing rooms)
