Online English Program In The United States

We use cookies to give you the best experience. They help our site work and are used for analytical purposes. Please accept cookies for a better experience on our website. The English Language Institute (ELI) at the College of Staten Island offers free English classes through Facebook Live video and Zoom meetings. These free short sessions are offered to students around the world who want to learn or practice English. There are even sessions explained in Spanish and English at the same time to help Spanish speakers understand the class.

Many English language centers around the world are closed and not many students have the opportunity to return to face-to-face English classes or have the means to attend online classes. According to the British Council, two billion English learners are expected in 2020, more than a quarter of the world’s population. Many students who wanted to come to the United States to study English have canceled their plans amid the COVID-19 health crisis.

ELI is transitioning its Spring 2020 semester to online learning. Students who have been studying English on campus are now taking Zoom classes with ELI teachers. The great advantage is that they continue to have synchronous instruction and the same course. Every day, ELI teachers live with students covering topics such as reading, writing, conversation, and TOEFL preparation courses. Students from Brazil, Colombia, Chile, China, Germany, Guatemala, Israel, Ivory Coast, Japan, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, South Korea, and Ukraine.

ELI also wants to help students who are coming to New York this summer and who have canceled English classes in their home countries. ELI organized short classes on its Facebook page and Zoom meetings, and the first class immediately had almost 1,000 views. ELI teachers will cover a different topic each week and for different levels of English (beginner, intermediate, and advanced).

Learning Zone Archives

The director of ELI, Gonzalo Villena, was surprised by the first class audience. “We have students come from Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Poland, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and different cities in the USA.”, according to the ELI Director. “Our goal is to help anyone who wants to practice English, help people whose English classes have been canceled in their country, or anyone who wants to have a good time during quarantine at home,” he added.

Because the first class was really successful with Spanish speakers, ELI extended an additional class explained in Spanish and English simultaneously. “Classes are taught 100 percent in English on Tuesdays and half Spanish, half English on Wednesdays,” Villena said. The goal is to reach as many students as possible and provide assistance using online instruction.

Classes are broadcast live on the ELI Facebook and Zoom pages every week at 15:00, New York time, but students in different time zones can watch the classes at any time since they are recorded and they have free access on the Facebook page. ELI also uploads classes on their YouTube channel so anyone can enjoy the topics they want to see. The first class is already available at this YouTube link. If you want to subscribe to the YouTube channel and receive notifications about new classes, you can always go to the channel.

ELI invites everyone to watch the next class. If you want to join from Facebook or Zoom, you just need to watch the event posted on ELI Facebook, ELI Instagram, ELI Twitter, ELI LinkedIn, or on the CSI or CUNY website. For those who want to join Zoom from a computer or laptop, they just need to click on the Zoom link and watch the class live; People joining Zoom from their mobile phones must download the app and add the meeting code number (the number posted on Facebook and other social media posts). sure where to start looking-or you are not sure how to choose-this post is for you.

EdX is one of the largest MOOC (massive open online course) websites out there. It was created by Harvard and MIT, two famous and expensive universities in America. You can find many college-level courses here, created and taught by actual professors from universities.

You can actually earn college credits on edX, through Arizona State University. It’s not free, but it’s cheaper than going to an actual college. Some courses have certificates that you can get for completing them. Most cost little money, so make sure you check the details before you sign up!

Like many other MOOCs, the classes here are similar to college courses and some take weeks to complete. A number of hours are required each week to learn all the material. You can study with the class, or read through the course after it’s complete (although you won’t get to talk to others about it if you choose to do that!).

The program is free but does not include exams and course certificates. The regular price is $279.99 per year for unlimited courses and certificates, but it’s sometimes on sale for $189.99.

Is a language learning program that uses videos to teach English by showing you how native speakers use it. It’s not technically a free course, but you can try it out with a free trial.

The videos include short video lessons as well as authentic clips such as commercials, music videos and scenes from popular TV shows. With content created by and for native speakers from around the English-speaking world, you get exposure to how the language sounds in its natural state.

All videos have interactive subtitles that allow you to click on words you don’t know to learn more. This way, you better understand what you are hearing.

The program’s built-in video dictionary allows you to view definitions, example sentences, pronunciation guides and a list of other videos that use the word.

You can add any words you see to a custom flashcard deck for later review, or practice using pre-made flashcard decks with themes like “basic adjectives” or “vegetables.” You can also review phrases and slang terms, which textbooks and other courses often leave out.

Also lets you review what you’ve learned with personalized quizzes, which change as you learn
