Are Coursera courses still free? At ClassCentral, we get this question so often that I wrote a guide to answer it. In general, Coursera courses are free to audit, but if you want to access graded assignments or earn a course certificate, you’ll need to pay. The change was first announced in October 2015, and went live in January 2016.

But I always knew there were some courses that were still completely free. When you sign up for these courses, you will see the option “Full Course, No Certificate”. For courses that are part of the new model, you need to select the “Audit” option.

It can be difficult to find out which courses have this option. This is because Coursera is a single page app, and information is only available once you log in. So instead of going through each course one by one and then clicking enroll, I decided to use Selenium to help me figure it out. . Bob set me up with an AWS instance and a Cloud 9 IDE where I could do this automation. Below is a screenshot of the setup. (Yes, I prefer PHP.)

I expected to find about 50 or so free courses out of an active catalog of ~6,000 Coursera courses. Imagine my surprise (rather than shock) to find over 1,600 Coursera MOOCs that are still completely free (including graded assignments, minus certificates). Even Coursera’s own help pages claim that for “all courses” you can only access ungraded materials and lectures for free. (Side note: In my research, I also found a few dozen fully paid online courses).

This list of completely free online Coursera courses includes many top-rated MOOCs, including some of Class Central’s best online courses. In fact, two of Coursera’s most popular MOOCs ever – Barbara Oakleys

MOOCs are also part of this list. Courses from 178 universities, including Stanford, Georgia Tech, Yale, Duke and Michigan, are part of the list. About 37% of the courses are not in English.

Here at Class Central we get asked all the time if Coursera courses are really free. The Coursera user interface (UI) is designed to push learners toward Coursera’s paid offerings, and it can confuse new learners about what’s free on the platform and how to sign up for it.

Coursera is an online education provider that offers online courses, known as MOOCs or massive open online courses, from top universities around the world. These partners include Stanford, Duke, Penn, Princeton, Michigan, Peking, and HEC Paris. Coursera also partners with companies like IBM, Google, and PwC – these companies have also launched courses on Coursera. It currently has 190 active partners from 48 countries around the world.

Online Degrees, Certificates, And Courses

Along with in-person courses and 34 online degrees, Coursera offers 900+ groups of courses known as specializations, professional certificates, and mastertracks. Some sets of courses may be used as credit toward degrees available through Coursera, but are not free when used as university credit.

Certificates were free in the early days of Coursera. Unfortunately, you can no longer get a free certificate for completing Coursera courses. Many MOOC providers have stopped offering free certificates for completing their online courses.

You can, however, apply for financial aid for most courses if you cannot pay for the certificate.

Yes and no Some courses on Coursera are paid only. These are indicated by a small green $ symbol on Class Central. An example is image recognition with TensorFlow on GCP.

At the time of writing this article, many courses have some element of “free” — most videos are free to watch but you need to pay if you want access to graded assignments and certificates. However, Coursera still has many courses for which even graded assignments are completely free.

Before you can see pricing, you must sign up with Coursera (join for free). Your ClassCentral account is not the same as a Coursera account.

Coursera “Audit of the Course” calls with access to free portions of the course. I first encountered this concept of auditing when I attended Georgia Tech, where I received my Masters in Computer Science. I got my undergrad degree in India and we didn’t have the concept to audit there.

Here’s a quick definition from a university’s FAQ: Auditing a course allows a student to take a class without the benefit of a grade or credit for a course.

So when you are looking to enroll in Coursera courses for free, look for the word audit after you select the Enroll for Free button. Audits do not include assessment items or a certificate, but lecture videos, course readings, and discussion forums are usually available for free. Coursera continues to tweak its UI or test different iterations so what appears on your screen on the Coursera website may differ from our screenshots.

Most newly introduced courses are part of a specialty or professional certificate. Some of the earlier courses that were around twelve weeks long have been converted to a specialty format, with the original course split into multiple courses.

The Professional Certificate and Specialization pages do not allow you to sign up for a course. If you click the “Enroll for Free” button, you will be given the option to subscribe to the full professional certificate or feature only.

To do a free audit, you need to find the individual course pages. If you scroll down a bit you will see a list of courses that are part of the feature. Click on the course name to go to the single course page.

Unfortunately, even though it lists courses in a specialization, the specialty page may not necessarily link to individual courses through course name links. In this case, to go to the course page, copy the course name and paste it into the search bar on Coursera. Better yet, you can search for courses at Class Central – https:///search. We’ll also show you results for courses that aren’t on Coursera.

When you are on the course page, select the Enroll button and find an Audit link as shown above.

Because some courses are part of more than one specialty or professional certificate, you may see a pop-up like this one. Click Next, or select the first drop-down arrow to change the program.

If you are on an individual course page and there is no audit link, it may be one of the only paid courses. You can check this by going back to the Class Central information page and looking for the green $ sign for COST.

This pop-up appears for courses with free access to graded assignments. Select Full Course Only, No Certificate option.

Coursera Plus is a single payment that gives you access to most courses in the catalog for 12 months, including assessments and certificates. While not free, it can be a worthwhile investment if you want a certificate for multiple courses or specialties.

I hope you found this guide useful. Please let me know if you find any Coursera courses that do not fit the patterns described above.
