Nick is proud to be able to help de-stigmatize STD testing through his writing and is always trying to advocate for the importance of your sexual health. We know that if we’re sexually active, we should attend regular sexual health screenings—but knowing that doesn’t stop the embarrassment of sitting in a clinic waiting room feeling anxious.

This is where online sexually transmitted infection (STI) tests come in handy. For those who are worried about going to a sexual health center, or don’t have the time, there are now a number of online STI testing services. But do they really work and which one can be trusted?

Dr. Rashid Bani, general practitioner and medical director at Your Sexual Health, says what to look for when considering an online STI test:

Free Home Sti Tests

“When we talk about online STI tests, we’re usually referring to tests that you buy online and do at home instead of going to a clinic,” explains Dr. Boni. “Some tests are done by sending a sample (either urine or blood) to a lab, while others are done at home by taking a swab or blood sample and then testing it against a chemical to get the result.”

This content was imported from You may be able to find the same content in a different format, or you may be able to find more information on their website.

“You’ll find a wide range of online STD tests in the major online marketplaces, but I wholeheartedly recommend that you don’t buy any instant tests and opt for a lab-based test instead,” says Dr. Boni. “Instant home tests frequently show false negatives because they are done incorrectly, the results or instructions are not always clear, and worse, if the test is positive, you have to deal with the consequences without medical advice.”

“Once you call your doctor, you probably won’t be able to start treatment without doing another test, because your doctor may not be confident about your home test,” he adds.

Testing Locations And Condom Sites

đź’ˇ Talk to the pharmacist before purchasing the test and check that the kit is sealed, has the CE mark and is within the expiry date before use.

If you have concerns about the quality of the self-test kit (for example if it is damaged), you should report it using the yellow card scheme. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has further advice on buying medical devices online.

“With home STD testing, we send a sample collection kit to your door,” says Dr. Bonney. It includes a sample container, everything you need to collect the sample, clear instructions and a return envelope to put the sample in and send it to our lab. All the patient has to do is take their sample and send it in and we do the rest.

Depending on the test, it takes 1-4 days to get the results back, and we notify them by phone or through our website portal, depending on the customer’s preference.

Reasons To Take Advantage Of Free Std/sti Testing

“If they test positive and they need medication or a referral for treatment, we take care of all that.” We also offer a free phone consultation with a GP to discuss your test results if they are positive.

Prices vary depending on your area, and some may offer services that offer free STI kits – especially for people under 25 or at risk of HIV.

“The cost depends on the test the patient has and can range from ÂŁ35 for a test for one condition to ÂŁ225 for a comprehensive screening,” says Dr Bonney.

Alternatively, everyone in the UK can get free NHS tests for any STD, including HIV, from their GP or local sexual health clinic.

The Chain Of Infection And Sexually Transmitted Diseases

“Online STD tests can test for any STD,” says Dr. Bonny. The ones we recommend test against the common ones (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV), but we test against the lesser-known STIs that are still really common, including Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Ureaplasma.

There are some tests that we cannot offer as home tests, such as early detection tests. This is because they require a larger amount of blood that cannot be obtained through a simple finger prick procedure that you can do at home.

“Testing at home is much more discreet than going to the clinic,” says Dr. Bonny. For many people, it is much easier if they lead a busy life.

In terms of the test itself, if you’re doing a lab test, you’ll get the same results whether you test at home or in a clinic.

Four Emerging Stis That You Can’t Afford To Ignore

“All of our results are either discussed over the phone or posted through our website,” explains Dr. Boni. It depends on the results and customer preference. If we can, we usually inform customers of positive results by phone. This allows us to discuss them. However, many customers specifically request no phone calls, which is fine.

“Most of the time, an STD can’t be diagnosed without testing,” says Dr. Bonney. For example, you may have symptoms of an STD, but you can’t be 100 percent sure what it is until you get tested. Likewise, you may not have any symptoms, but you need to be tested to find out if you have an STD.

Now, it doesn’t matter if you go to the clinic or do the test at home, the important thing is the test itself. Once you’ve had an accurate test from a reputable STD testing provider, you can get treatment either at a clinic or at home.

The only time I’d say it’s definitely worth seeing a doctor is if you have a sore, sore, or blister that might be seen during an outbreak of genital herpes or a syphilis infection. The doctor can then examine you and possibly provide treatment while performing tests.

America is losing the battle against sexually transmitted infections. Cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis all hit record highs in 2015. Tens of thousands of people become infected with HIV each year in the United States, and oral cancers caused by human papillomavirus are on the rise.

So startups are popping up online to help fill what they see as an unmet demand for STD testing. One advertises that you can “get a sexy deal” by ordering.

The question is whether those companies can survive—at least one exited the market before its product launched—and whether the services they offer are performing the right tests for the right people.

While encouraging people to get tested is a simple enough public health message, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do, says Kevin Alt, professor of obstetrics and gynecology.
