Do your research and make sure your potential instructor has solid experience in the dance industry and culture.

It is equally important to make sure that your instructor is not just any dancer who has decided to give some lessons.

If it’s not clear that the instructor has a lot of teaching experience, make sure you can preview their classes to get an idea of their teaching style.

One of the hardest things about taking home dance lessons is not having a well-crafted plan for leveling up.

Tips For Making Online Classes Work For You

You can find some really great classes online, but you may feel completely lost as to which classes to take and in what order.

For example, if you want to learn how to blast your whole body like a pro, celebrity popper Slim Boogie teaches you how to unlock each body part, class by class.

Classes at a physical studio can easily cost $20 a session, while online classes are often much more affordable.

Carefully weigh the benefits of each learning platform and sign up for classes that show a clear value for money.

For example, if you plan to take more than 1-2 lessons, look for a platform that offers unlimited lessons for a monthly or annual fee rather than a per-course fee.

It can be difficult to see instructors clearly, you may need to constantly pause and rewind, and it can be difficult to monitor your progress if you don’t have a mirror to practice.

Even if you THINK you’re completely confident in an online course, don’t lock yourself out until you test it out and look for trouble spots.

Before signing up for anything, make sure you have a customer support email or phone number, just in case.

Are Online Virtual Dance Classes Worth It?

Mariya Calhoun stepped back from the webcam she had installed to show the general view of the living room in her Kalamazoo apartment. She wanted the audience to see her choreography clearly, she said.

Looking into the camera, he greeted several dancers standing in their homes around Michigan for a virtual class hosted by the Okemos Dancersin Institute.

CEO and Director Glenn Douglas Packard, an Emmy-nominated choreographer, was also waiting at his home to photograph what represented a new beginning for the dance studio.

The coronavirus forced Packard to suspend in-person dance classes on Friday the 13th. But he wasn’t going to let that be a bad omen.

Packard kept hope alive for her students by putting their sessions online. It has also partnered with the Lansing Public School District to offer free online dance classes to students in the community.

“The coronavirus won’t stop us from achieving our dreams,” Packard said. “We don’t tell people about our dreams. We show them.”

The Institute of Dancers specializes in commercial dance styles; Packard gained expertise after performing with Michael Jackson, Ricky Martin, Daddy Yankee, Usher, Pink and other artists during his 30-year career.

Packard asked his student and assistant choreographer Calhoun to teach the introductory web class to Dua Lipa’s “Physical” class on Monday.

“Everybody was in high spirits when we went online,” said Calhoun, a 20-year-old dance student at Western Michigan University. “The class helps everyone stay positive during this time. It reminds me that at the end of the day everything will be alright.”

Although Packard grew up in Clare, where the family was expected to continue the farming tradition – incidentally – this was not intentional. He even went to Michigan State University in the dairy business department.

After injuring his leg in a farming accident that resulted in doctors thrusting a steel rod into his calf, Packard realized that his dream of dancing might have escaped. After her mobility improved, she went to New York at the age of 23 to study commercial dance.

She has danced around the country in Miami, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, and has returned to her hometown to teach the next generation of she.

“My heart was telling me to go back to Michigan,” Packard said. “My parents are getting old. I felt the next part was to open a company and give back everything it gave me to the government.”

Where he found his unconventional dance space is thanks to a friend Missy Lilje who seems to think outside the box.

She has been dancing since she was 3 years old and she wanted to be a background dancer for musical artists. Growing up in Detroit, she never found the commercial dance training she wanted until she joined the Dancers Institute after high school.

“We learned from the institute to send audition videos,” Calhoun said. “I booked the job and flew to Miami. I felt ready as soon as I got there.”

From Studio To Living Room, Dance Classes Go Online

Along with Packard and other dancers in the studio, she performed with artists such as Becky G. and Luis Fonsi at the 2019 Billboard Latin Music Awards held in Las Vegas last year.

Packard brought in several famous choreographers: Sheryl Murakami, who worked with Beyoncé; Liana Blackburn, working with Katy Perry and Taylor Swift; and Danny Lugo—working with Luis Fonsi—and plans to continue bringing in high-profile choreographers during their online classes, while also teaching their students how to learn choreography from video.

“To get a job in the (dance) industry, you have to learn choreography from a video,” she said. “This is a great time for them to learn the skill.”

Studio choreographers will teach live choreography to Lansing Public School District students and everyone else in the community on their Instagram page Friday, March 27. Education leaders in the region will ensure students are aware of this opportunity.
