Tuition & Online College Financial Aid
“We focus on college and career readiness and all the steps it takes to get them into school. And one thing we know is a big barrier is money. And one of the biggest ways that With us we can help them get the money they need. The FAFSA for College is the Free Application for Student Aid.”
Forms are required for student aid such as Stafford and Parent Plus loans, along with Pell Grants. But Cathy McDonald, assistant director of network partnerships with the Florida College Access Network, noted that it’s also a prerequisite for other forms of student aid.
“Many colleges use the FAFSA to determine local types of aid, such as scholarships and grants, which are sources of aid that the colleges themselves distribute.”
McDonald adds millions of dollars in aid each year in Florida alone because students don’t apply. Unfortunately, the FAFSA document is by no means the simplest or most user-friendly application ever designed. That’s why ASPIRE’s Corey Melton said a special interactive seminar on how to fill out the complicated form is coming up on the evening of Monday, May 17.
Fafsa Student Aid Report Explained
“We’re having a virtual FAFSA completion night. During that evening — it will be from 6 to 7:30 — we’ll actually be taking students and their families through the FAFSA question-by-question.”
“We’ll have Bill Spears from the financial aid office at T.C.C. leading us, question by question. In addition to Bill, we’ll have 10-12 financial aid specialists from FSU, FAMU, TCC, Lively and some of our schools. Systems as well as answering questions from students and their families.”
Melton cautioned, however, that the information and instructions provided during this FAFSA online seminar will be targeted to a specific audience.
Presumably, most members of those graduating classes eventually want to have a good job. And Cathy MacDonald of the Florida College Access Network said filling out the FAFSA is becoming more critical than ever in that regard.
Things Students Need To Know During Covid 19
“The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity estimates that by 2025 67% of all jobs will require some type of degree or credential to qualify for those jobs.”
But the first step, he stressed, is to complete the FAFSA. For a link to the May 17 online application seminar, see the Tallahassee Chamber’s “Cash for College” weblink.
