After working for four years as a bond trader for DE Shaw & Co., Rusczyk created the Art of Problem Solving website, which provides resources for middle and high school studts to improve their abilities in mathematics and problem solving. These include real-time competitions to solve math problems and online tools to learn how to solve problems of increasing difficulty as well as math forums. As of May 26, 2021, there are 709,491 students, 1,322,594 topics, and a total of 15,182,054 posts on the site. Rusczyk also published the Art of Problem Solving series of books aimed at a similar audience. The site also offers fee-based online math classes, which range from Prealgebra to Group Theory and Calculus. In addition, Art of Problem Solving offers Python programming classes and Olympiad level classes in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, called WOOT.

Rusczyk founded and serves on the board of the nonprofit Art of Problem Solving Initiative, which administers the United States of America Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) and funds several local mathematics initiatives around the United States. In 2012, Rusczyk won the Mathcounts distinguished alumnus award. In 2014, Rusczyk won the Paul Erdős Award from the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions.

The Art of Problem Solving also has an extensive community of over 500,000 math, computer science, and physics enthusiasts.

In 2020, Mathcounts was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Art of Problem Solving is hosting an online Mathcounts Week.

The Art of Problem Solving is also hosting the second round of the American Invitational Mathematics Examination as the American Online Invitational Mathematics Examination.

The Art of Problem Solving also hosted the American Mathematics Competitions from November 10–16, and is hosting it in February 2021.

Problem sets for homework are included. The website also hosts several forums, where users can post math problems and play math and strategy games. The Art of Problem Solving wiki has many formulas and additional information. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the website also started hosting several math and scice competitions. Among them are the American Mathematics Competitions, American Invitational Mathematics Examination, United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, the Putnam Competition, F=ma examination, USA Biolympiad, and Mathcounts.

Richard Ruscyzk has both written and co-authored several books for students in grades 5-12, including Pre-algebra, Introduction to Algebra, Introduction to Geometry, and many others. During his studies at Princeton University, he also wrote the Art of Problem Solving Volumes 1 and 2 with Sandor Lehoczky.

Rusczyk studied chemical engineering at Princeton University and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1993. He previously served on the board for ARML and managed the Western ARML site. Continued use of the program can become quite expensive over time.

Bottom Line: Separate sections for younger and older students help teach kids at all levels, from foundational skills to Math Olympiad training.

The Art of Problem Solving allows students to focus on math concepts they struggle with or (for advanced students) offer a challenge. The site presents materials as self-paced for younger students or as online, interactive courses for older students. There is also a large collection of additional resources available on the site, including videos and an extensive forum (over eight million posts and counting) where students discuss all the different from mathematical concepts.

The site is best designed for students who want to work independently on their math knowledge,  although some of the materials presented —  such as videos —  may be good for a teacher to use with throughout the class to introduce a topic or provide another. view of it. If you are a Math Olympiad coach or have students preparing for math competitions,  you will find the videos of sample test questions very helpful; many of the resources found here are specifically aimed at kids preparing to compete at the national level.

The Art of Problem Solving has added a lot of math content over the past few years and now includes videos, interactive courses, and a fun, game-based academy for young learners. The site is divided into different sections, each focusing on a different area of math and different grade levels. The main divisions are AoPS Online, Beast Academy, and AoPS Academy.

AoPS Online provides older students with lessons on everything from pre-algebra foundational skills to Math Olympiad training. There is also a large forum where students can interact with each other to ask — and answer — various math problems. Beast Academy is for young learners and has a fun interface with comic characters, videos, games, and more for grades 2 to 5. Finally, AoPS Academy is an in-person academy which students can attend.

Overall, The Art of Problem Solving provides a variety of resources to help struggling students succeed and to encourage and build development for students to challenge themselves. The fact that it’s all presented together in one place can also have the bonus effect of encouraging struggling students to take on more and more challenges — and maybe the next Olympians of Math.

The selection of videos, books, forums, online interactive classes, and games (for younger students) means that students have many different ways to learn the material. Beast Academy, in particular, excels at providing students with a variety of learning options. The bright colors and fun characters also give a friendly air to the site without losing the teaching focus.

Bright Ideas For Summer 2022

The forum promotes student collaboration, but it’s difficult to navigate, and some of the posts are less about math and more about “kids being kids” in an online environment. But for those who take the time to explore, there are many sources of information to be found.

Different content formats give students with different abilities more options to access the materials. The forum, although difficult to navigate, encourages children to interact with each other in a safe, friendly way.

The math content covers a large number of concepts and is structured differently by grade level: webinar lectures for older students and games and comic book characters for younger students.

Beast Academy gives kids plenty of cues, and online, interactive classes give students direct access to the teacher. Digging through the forum may provide more help.

Math Book 5a For Grade 5 Learners

Intensive program with emphasis on deep understanding of concepts and love of mathematics. Highly recommended over most of the curriculums I’ve tried.

The K-5 program is robust and can easily be used with any k-6 program. The content is challenging but so intense that any level of student can use the program with support.

The art of problem solving program for 6-12 is very difficult. This can be used by all students, but again, will require support. Online classes are great, only books need solid classroom support. Clearly aimed at high functioning students. This is a math program that goes beyond basic understanding and rote memorization to promote real, deep understanding and complex thinking. There are many problems available and a rich online community. The Art of Problem Solving brings its problem-solving teaching methods to academic centers, with a Virtual Campus, twelve physical locations in the US, and more being added each year.

Success in school and in life requires critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. Students build on all three of our challenging classes in math, science, and language arts.
