BIMD 220 (3 credits) and BIMD 221 (3 credits) together is a complete overview of the anatomy and physiology of the major human organ systems and the foundational concepts needed to understand them. BIMD 220 includes introductory material introducing A&P, cells and tissues, and advances in the skin, skeletal, muscular, and nervous organ systems. BIMD 221 is a more advanced study of the endocrine, lymphatic, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Each concept is presented through the lens of a diverse human population, and both BIMD 220 and 221 are validated as essential courses of study with a special emphasis on “The Diversity of Human Experience”. Together, the courses are designed to meet field standards using the HAPS learning outcomes and objectives.

These courses use the evidence-based best practices of a flipped classroom and active learning. This means that the students never sit through a lengthy lecture on a topic. Learning is work and involves student participation.

These courses are also unique in their organization. They use a badge progression model, which is a method of gamification for learning. Essentially, the content of these courses is broken down into easily identifiable units called badges. Upon completion of BIMD 220 and 221, students work their way through 14 content badges that represent all major body systems. Students begin in BIMD 220 at the Beginner level, advance to Intermediate level by the end of BIMD 220, and finally progress to Scholar when they complete BIMD 221. This gives students a more visual way to track their progress. The topics covered in BIMD 220 are:

Students receive badges from the Teaching Transformation and Development Academy (TTaDA) via email sent to their official email account. They will be asked to accept this badge, which will give them a permanent Acclaim account where they will have a URL to add to their CV or share their badges on various social media.

Prerequisites for physical therapy school include anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, biology and psychology.

By the time I decided to get into physical therapy, I had already met about half of my requirements. I majored in Economics in college and still had to take Anatomy & Physiology and Physics & Biology 2s. My goal was to complete this in a year…while also having a full-time job. Scheduling 20 credit hours is challenging enough, especially if you need them in the evenings.

Luckily, I was accepted into a program in December, giving me a couple of weeks to ask the admissions team if an online physics course from January through July would meet my requirements. I send the course information to the school and they said it was approved so I signed up for my online physics course with lab!

I had taken a few online undergraduate courses and thought it might be possible to take an online physics course for college credits as well. After a few weeks of research, I found a really great option at Ocean County College in New Jersey.

I know it sounds a little crazy. But I called and spoke to an admissions officer about the course and it sounded like it could work.

Quick note: Ocean didn’t ask me to write this. I found college on my own and I hope online physics classes help someone the way it helped me!

Ok, that’s the simplified version, but it really wasn’t that difficult. Mind you, the physics were difficult, but the online classes were easy to navigate.

The course was pretty much a self-paced, self-paced course like you would find in any distance learning program. You had to read the actual text to teach yourself anything, but the lesson plans helped you understand what could be tested in the weekly quizzes. The two exams had a similar structure to the quizzes (all online), which helped you focus on the types of questions you needed to understand and solve.

The physics lab consisted of a real lab kit with a task each week. Here is what was included in the lab kit to give you an idea of the subjects covered in the lab.

I’ll be honest – online physics with a lab wasn’t easy. It required LOTS of reading and self-teaching. I used many of the Khan Academy physics videos to supplement my learning and was able to complete Physics 1 and 2 in the spring and summer semesters before starting at Washington University in St. Louis.

Now, I want to reiterate: Consult with your program before beginning any online requirement. Every program I contacted said an online course from an accredited college was fine. But I have researched and presented all the information – which I recommend to everyone.

Taking an online course didn’t come cheap. The physics course alone (8 credits) cost over $2,000. I also had to take biology (3 credits) which cost about $1,100. My anatomy and physiology course (also online, with lab) cost about $2,500 – not cheap! (I will share how I did anatomy and physiology online with the lab in another article.)

Which Nursing Prerequisites Should You Take Online?

Basically, I paid for the convenience of studying physics on my spare time and still working full time, which paid the bills as I prepared to start PT school.
