On Nov. 28, another small men’s college basketball game made national news when the UC Davis Aggies — a bona fide Division I team that made the NCAA Tournament recently and in 2017 — were eliminated by a for-profit art school in San Francisco.

It’s hard to know what was more offensive to the viewers: The Academy of Arts University (whose jersey reads “Art U”) beat the Aggies 79-60, taking the best record in the Division II Pacific West Conference. — or the school has a men’s basketball team at all.

It makes sense. Art U is really good at making dramatic games: Nick (Official SB) (@GodSchrammit) November 29, 2021

But the people involved in the program were not surprised. That includes Art U’s founding athletic director, former 49ers tight end Jamie Williams, who was instrumental in the school’s athletic department a little more than a decade ago.

It’s the first year that we’re going to play somebody really good, we’re going to get killed in every game. But as ‘Well’ he says about the first talks about the sports department. “We learn from that.”

Sure enough, since its first competitive games in 2008, Art U has managed to win national championships, produce Olympians and beat top-ranked basketball teams — a remarkable string of accomplishments for a still-evolving program.

Academies At Ahs

The Academy of Art University itself has a much less palatable reputation, although, as you tend to stumble upon, the school’s profits apply to anyone. The university is owned by the Stephens family, who were the first to acquire San Francisco real estate and leased it to the school. Running the show is Elisa Stephens, 62, a staple of the San Francisco social scene with an eight million dollar fortune built largely from tuition.

In fact, the success of the sports program was among the few positive sources of the high school. And its creation can be traced back to a night in 2005, when Stephens — a sports fan looking to build a school’s academic credentials — asked Williams to build a sports program from scratch.

When Stephens first arrived at Williams, he doubted it was his most daring idea: building an art school with sports teams without an athletic program that could compete with the best teams in the country. But it was a pleasant enough idea that an Italian meeting would meet him on the North Shore.

“I want to be like Stanford or Colagon,” he remembers telling her over dinner. “I want someone to beat.”

The two made an odd couple: Stephens, who uses large buckles and buckles with arm-thingy pads, was riding high, sending his profits to school, doing real estate and, shall we say, spending generously. write someone It has long been the deadliest graduation rate, one that hovers around 45%, according to the most recent data — a discrepancy that can charitably be described as a red flag. (Stephen did not respond to requests for comment.)

Williams, who stands 6-foot-4 with an affable grin, has been out of the NFL since 1993 and is now unsuccessfully working in a film industry. So when Stephen asked for his advice, he gave it to him.

It continues with the logistics. Do the schools have resources? No, he said. Did it have any kind of affiliation with the conference games? No. Any coaches lined up? Not one.

“There are two stories that you have to mitigate,” Stephen recalls. “Nobody. 1, The school is full of artists. And it’s a myth that you can’t be an artist and an athlete. No. 2: Because it’s not, there’s going to be a lot of pushback from people who don’t believe that you’re committed and that you can do it.”

According to Williams — who often narrates the hero of the story — the final beat of the evening was directed by Aaron Sorkin’s show.

“I said, ‘You will have someone who is brave enough to tackle that rock up the hill, who is not afraid, who knows what others don’t know, and who wants to build what is forever. “”

Stephen remembers looking at him for a while. Then she asked: “When can you start?”

Williams took the job in part because of his deep respect for Stephens, who he says “gets a bad rap in some circles,” but he’s awesome.

He also knew that he could turn his dream into something special. In fact, it doesn’t just predict the success of the program – it actually manifests it. “One of the best things about my own journey was to be able to explain there that people who are brave enough to aspire to it,” he said.

But first there were enormous institutional hurdles to overcome. Shortly after he began, he said, the chair shot the decumane’s finger into his chest. “I don’t want any of your athletes on my side that they can’t do.”
